MOSCOW Jaromir Jagr signed with a Russian team a day after his split with the New York Rangers, returning to the club he joined during the NHL’s 2004 05 lockout.

The Russian League team Avangard Omsk announced the signing of the 36 year old Czech winger on its Web site Friday.

Jagr’s agent, Pat Brisson, confirmed the signing in an e mail. He and Jagr, as well the team, wouldn’t comment on contract terms. However, the deal is believed to be for two years plus an option for a third, and will pay Jagr about $7 million tax free the equivalent of about $11 million a season in the NHL.

“It was a very difficult but personal decision to make in light of the many NHL teams interested in his services,” Brisson said. “He is grateful to the NHL and especially the Rangers in recent years.”

Jagr enjoyed his experience in Omsk during the lockout.

“Don’t forget I’m from Europe,” Jagr told the Canadian Press. “Russia is nothing new for me. It’s close to the Czech Republic. It would be different for American or Canadian players. But for me, I enjoy it. The people love hockey and I had a great time out there.”

Pittsburgh, Edmonton and the Rangers are believed to have had the most interest in Jagr. All offered one year deals.

“I want to thank all the teams that still believed in me and still made an offer,” Jagr said. “Edmonton was probably the biggest offer I got. It was a great offer, to be honest with you.”

Jagr had long been reported to be considering lucrative offers from Russia. Rangers general manager Glen Sather grew impatient waiting for serious negotiations with Jagr’s wholesale authentic nhl jerseys
side and went in another direction Thursday, signing former Vancouver Canucks captain Markus Naslund and making Jagr’s return unlikely.

“I’m thankful for the three years I had in New York,” Jagr said. “They were great years. I understand that I’m older and the team decided to go in a different direction because they couldn’t get the deal done.”

If Jagr had reached 84 points or won a major NHL award this season, his expiring contract would have been automatically extended for one year.

He just missed being league MVP two years ago when he was the runner up after breaking Rangers records for goals (54) and points (123) in a season.

Though Jagr finished with 71 points this past season, his inspired play over the final weeks of the regular season and his five goal, 10 assist outburst in 10 postseason games showed he has plenty of game left.

Jagr began his NHL career in 1990 and played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals and the Rangers. In 1,273 NHL games, he had 1,599 points on 646 goals and 953 assists.

The Rangers reached the playoffs each of the last three seasons the past two with Jagr as captain but didn’t get past the second round.

After the Rangers’ season ended, Jagr indicated he planned to eventually return to the Czech Republic to play for his hometown club in Kladno.

“I don’t think I would sign longer than two years, just because of my dad,” Jagr said in May. “He asked me to come home in two years. He’s helping to build a new arena there and he wants me to be there.”

The forward situation for the Stars has become more scrambled as they try to finalize their lineup for opening night Oct. 13 against the Anaheim Ducks at American Airlines Center.

Center Tyler Seguin, who suffered a hairline fracture in the heel during preparations for the World Cup of Hockey, is skating in full practices but won’t play against the Los Angeles Kings in the Stars’ final exhibition game Friday in Las Vegas. Still, coach Lindy Ruff said he believes Seguin will be ready for the season opener “in all likelihood.”

“We want to get him to be where he’s comfortable playing,” Ruff said. “It’s hard to put it at 100 percent. When he’s comfortable, that’s when he’ll play. He’s moving close to that direction.”

Moving away from that direction is winger Ales Hemsky. He suffered a groin injury in the World Cup and has had a setback in his rehab.

“He’s being re evaluated. We’ll see where he’s at Monday or Tuesday,” Ruff said. “It’s probably pushing him back a little bit. I don’t know where he will be for opening night. That’s in question now.”

Meanwhile, authentic nhl jerseys cheap
Devin Shore, who suffered an ankle injury in training camp, is expected to play against the Kings, and the Stars are giving a tryout to former Minnesota forward Justin Fontaine.

Shore, 22, had 26 points (15 goals, 11 assists) in 23 games in the AHL last season before injuring a shoulder. He might be the Stars’ most NHL ready prospect. Fontaine, 28, had 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 60 games with the Wild last season. He’s an unrestricted free agent.

The Stars also have injuries to Mattias Janmark (knee, with April return) and Cody Eakin (knee, with November return) and lost Valeri Nichushkin to the KHL. Gemel Smith and Adam Cracknell have done the most in preseason to help fill in.

The Stars and Kings on Friday will play the first hockey game in the new T Mobile Arena, which will be home to the yet unnamed Las Vegas franchise entering the league next season.

MONTREAL Can the Montreal Canadiens make a deep playoff run? Ask that question to any rival coach, player or scout and they will respond with the identical answer: with No. 31 in net, anything is always possible. Carey Price has recovered from some midseason struggles and is back to his stellar self just as the postseason approaches. I sat down with the former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner on Thursday night after the Habs clinched a playoff spot with a win over the Florida Panthers. Is this as good as you’ve felt since that strong start [the Canadiens got off to the best 10 game start in franchise history] to the season?

Price: Yeah, you know, it’s a long year, so you’re going to go through ups and downs throughout a season. You have to pace yourself. Obviously, it would be nice to be on top of your game the entire season, but what I’ve learned during my career is that timing is everything. You want to be playing well at the right time. I think we’re starting to pull our game together at the right time. 14], which always seems to happen when a new coach is brought in. What has been different since Claude Julien came on board?

Price: We’ve had a pretty positive outlook on everything. When you do make a coaching change, it obviously does shake up everybody, it makes you wonder where you stand in the lineup. I think our guys have responded really well to that. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be contenders. We’ve made it this far. We have all the assets and all the right parts to make a great run. Hockey is not No. 1. It’s a life changer, and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. (Lynda Price is a former chief of the Ulkatcho First Nation in British Columbia.) She certainly sounds like an impressive person. How has she inspired you?

Price: She’s a very intelligent person, a very hard working person. She went back to law school and got her degree. Now she’s going to run for chief again in our community. Maybe that will open up more doors for her down the road. She’s a natural leader. She’s not the loudest person in the room but what she says always means something from the heart. One of your great moments was winning Olympic gold with Team Canada in Sochi. How important is it to you that NHL players get to go to the Games again?

Price:I want to represent my country. It was one of my top 10 life experiences so far. I’d love to go again. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be going, I don’t think. Do you even think about them anymore? Is the adjustment period over with?

Price: Well, it took probably a week or so to get used to having your stuff overlap a little differently. But it’s history now. From my vantage point, we’re very vulnerable. We’re looking at the puck and guys are coming barreling in. I get that you have to go to the net and score goals, but if you’re going to run over the goalie there should be some type of consequence. Obviously, the league has changed from the early ’90s, when you’d have a 6 cheap jerseys
foot 6, 250 pound guy to answer to if you ran into the goalie. That’s just my opinion. Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby and probably Sergei Bobrovsky.

Price: Yes, I’ve gotten wedding invitations in the mail. (He laughs.) That’s pretty bold. It’s funny, because some of the invitations are for weddings in September. I’m a little bit busy then. So I’ve sent back the little card with a decline in it.

Mike Heika recently held a chat to talk all things Dallas Stars. Here are some highlights:

Why do you think the Stars have trouble winning at home?

Heika: They could have been much better in each of the past two games, and I think that’s on the players. Yes, there are injuries, but they just didn’t play well against LA authentic jerseys cheap
or Columbus. Both of those teams played hard, but both were beatable. The Kings have injury issues in goal, and the Stars should have been able to take advantage against Peter Budaj. The Blue Jackets outworked the Stars, and they had played on Friday night in Ohio. That was disappointing.

Dallas last season committed to winning at home, and they have to show that commitment more. Winnipeg is coming in off playing in the Heritage Classic outdoor game, and might struggle to get back to the routine of NHL play. The Stars need to take advantage of that.

It’s early, but if they go winless in this three game homestand, that will only exacerbate the problems they are experiencing and create pressure, which can make winning the next game even tougher.

The Stars have a couple home and homes coming up. Does the NHL do that a lot during the regular season?

Heika: I wish they did it more, but not so much.

Ralph Strangis had what I believe is a brilliant idea, which is to have two games in the same city over three days. Have the Blackhawks play Thursday and Saturday in Dallas. Have the Stars play Friday and Sunday in St. Louis.

Not every weekend has to be like that, but that’s something I would like to see at least a few times a year.

I like the Winnipeg here Tuesday, Stars at Winnipeg Thursday. I think that should be fun.

You think Niemi will get a start here soon? Lehtonen’s been good but I remember Ruff alternating between them every 3 games or so

Heika: Yeah, I think Tuesday is a possibility. We were debating it today, and the only thing that would make you lean toward Lehtonen is the fact he has played very well and they need to win this game Tuesday. My guess is whatever happens, Niemi and Lehtonen split the two games against Winnipeg.

Which Central team do you think is most improved from a year ago? I’m leaning towards either Nashville or Minnesota. Wild’s record might not be too flashy but their real good on both ends of the ice. I like that Eric Staal acquisition for them too

They’re recommending a week of rest. They say it should take care of it, Harbaugh said. I guess with the back, you can always say, ‘We’ll see.’ All indications from back specialist and Dr. [John] Carbone is he should be fine in about a week. That’s what we’ll be hoping for and praying for.

Former Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas made an interesting decision this past season by choosing to sit out the lockout shortened year rather than playing second fiddle to Tuukka Rask in Boston. The decorated American goalie is back, however, as he signed a tryoutdeal with the Florida Panthers.Even though Thomas is 39 years old, there is reason to believe that he still has plenty left in the tank. Thomas’ numbers were solid during the 2011 12 season, when he posted a 2.36 goals against average to go along with a .920 save percentage and a sparkling 35 19 1 record. It can be argued that taking a year off will be disadvantageous to Thomas because of his advancing age, but at the same time, taking a year off means that Thomas has avoided extra wear and tear to his body. He should be fresh heading into next season and he will likely be ready to shoulder the load in net.Thomas is just two years removed from one of the most prolific goaltending seasons in recent memory. Not only did he win the second Vezina Trophy of his career by virtue of a 35 11 9 record, a 2.00 goals against average and a .938 save percentage, but he also went on to lead the Bruins to a Stanley Cup victory while winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in his own right.Thomas’ numbers during the cheap authentic jerseys
2010 11 postseason were unreal. He went 16 9 with a 1.98 goals against average, a .940 save percentage and four shutouts. There is no doubt that Boston’s Stanley Cup win was a full team effort, but without the stellar play of Thomas between the pipes, there is no chance the Bruins would have gotten as far as they did.It remains to be seen if Thomas has that type of performance left in him, but the fact that he has done it before has to inspire confidence. Thomas has to know that he may not have many more opportunities to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup as he approaches the age of 40, so he should be motivated this season. It’s simply a question of whether or not his body will cooperate. In addition to chasing the Stanley Cup, there is probably another goal on Thomas’ list. He was the backup goalie in 2010 when Team USA won a silver medal at the Olympics, and with the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi coming up in the middle of next season, he has a chance to make his case for the team.Thomas definitely has his work cut out for him as plenty of American goalies have emerged since the Vancouver Olympics. Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, who was the starter in 2010, will certainly be in the mix again this time around. Other names to keep tabs on are Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings, Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings, Cory Schneider of the New Jersey Devils and Craig Anderson of the Ottawa Senators.Even if Thomas doesn’t make the Olympic team, though, he has an opportunity to do something special. Only Thomas and perhaps his agent know why he took last season off, but the obvious answer is that he saw the writing on the wall with regards to Rask. Thomas had to know that Rask was going to cut into his playing time significantly, and perhaps he didn’t want to deal with that.It worked out well for the Bruins as Rask established himself as a top goalie and led Boston to the Stanley Cup Final. Time will tell if the move works in Thomas’ favor, but if he is even a fraction of the goalie that he was prior to taking a year off, he should have a very successful season.

GLENDALE, Ariz. Jonathan Bernier shook off the rust and earned his first shutout of the season.

Bernier, starting in goal for the first time since Dec. 20, had 26 saves in the Anaheim Ducks’ 3 0 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

“We were staunch enough on the defensive side of it that our goalie wasn’t called upon to make a bunch of 10 bell saves, but he did wholesale hockey jerseys
pitch a shutout,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “He hadn’t played in a while and this strengthens our belief in the 1 A (John Gibson) and 1 B (Bernier) tandem that we have.”

Louis Domingue had 20 saves for the Coyotes, who outshot the Ducks 26 22.

The Pacific Division leading Ducks needed a video review to clear the way for their first goal.

Lindholm’s wrister appeared to bounce off the crossbar and play continued for a few seconds, but a review showed the puck hit the inside of the crossbar for a goal that made it 1 0.

Anaheim nursed that lead through two periods until the opening minute of the third.

The puck was cleared off the boards and careened back right in front of the Arizona net. Domingue came out of the net to try to get a stick on it, but Ritchie got there first and sent the puck between the goalie’s legs to make it 2 0.

“I don’t know if he (Domingue) missed it or what happened but I had it right in front of the net,” Ritchie said. “He wasn’t really in position and I just shot it in. It was a lucky break and got us a two goal lead.”

Domingue said it was one of many strange bounces the puck takes in Arizona’s home arena.

“I thought it was going to go towards Oliver (Ekman Larsson),” he said, “but unfortunately it went to the middle, and at that point it was just a reaction and no more stick to stop it. So it was a bad break because it would of been a much different game, for sure.”

Bernier made a few sprawling saves as the Coyotes took 11 shots on goal in the final period. The closest Arizona came to scoring was Michael Stone’s slap shot that hit the post in the first period.

Bernier hadn’t started a game since a 5 1 loss at Montreal on Dec. 20 and worked to stay sharp for whenever his next chance came.

“The only way you build (your teammates’ confidence in you) is by working hard in practice and making saves on them,” he said, “and when you get your chance to go in, you know you’re ready mentally because you worked hard and they know that you’re ready to go.”

The Coyotes, coming off a 4 3 win over Winnipeg on Friday night, were shut out for the fourth time in their last 18 games. They came up empty on three power plays to one for Anaheim.

“Lots of try in our group,” Arizona coach Dave Tippett said. “We pushed hard but we just couldn’t bury the one that we needed to get back in the game. That second goal of theirs is kind of a weird bounce to come off the boards that funny way. They got the break and we didn’t.”

Game notes

The Ducks are 11 2 4 against Pacific Division foes. . Anaheim is 13 2 3 in last 18 games against Coyotes. . Ducks have at least a point in 10 of their last 11 games. . The Coyotes and Ducks meet once more this season, Feb. 20 in Glendale. . With an assist on the first goal, Anaheim’s Corey Perry is four points shy of 700 for his career. . Arizona’s two straight victories had come at home.

ST. PAUL, MN DECEMBER 3: Bill Daly speaks during a press conference prior to the game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Minnesota Wild on December 3, 2014 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. (Photo by Bruce Kluckhohn/NHLI via Getty Images)Lavoie broke the news on Twitter, but said that there was “nothing [finalized] yet” between the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association.

From Westhead’s report:

One third of the 2,400 player urine samples collected each year are screened more closely for drugs of abuse, such as cocaine. Those more comprehensive tests have shown cocaine use by NHL players is on the rise.

He also noted the NHL Players’ Association executive director Don Fehr, “raised the issue of cocaine” last season warning players about the “health dangers and the consequences of being caught.”

Lavoie outlines possible punishment for cocaine usage.

If a player test positive to cocaine, they’ll be no suspension, but help will be given with the substance abuse program of the NHL and PA. But like I said, nothing finalize yet. “I mean, I know myself personally, I know if I ever got into that it would be a slippery slope and a bad road to go down. I’ve never seen it in person so, I was grateful to be a part of a group of guys who never was into something like that,” Kings forward Milan Lucic said in October when asked by Puck Daddy about cocaine usage in the NHL. “I mean, I know myself personally, I know if I ever got into that it would be a slippery slope and a bad road to go down.

Seems like some messages are being sent all over the place here. But whoever decided it was a good idea for Laich to air out his unhappiness with life in the AHL by going to the press, be that him or his agent, the waivers look like a message from Lamoriello and it says: don’t do that.

It didn’t help Frank Corrado when he went to the Athletic with his unhappiness, although in that case, it seemed like the Leafs may have genuinely wholesale jerseys china
tried to move him when he became surplus to requirements. He didn’t actually come out and ask for a trade via the press either. It’s also not clear if Milan Michalek’s lamentations of regret over waiving his no trade clause, made to the Athletic earlier in the season, helped him out any. He has been reported as injured at least twice and has played only 16 games, which isn’t going to help get him a trade now or a job in the NHL next year.

He has played only 16 games in the Marlies lineup this season and was absent from the team rehabbing an unnamed injury over a long Christmas break. Since he’s returned, he’s played regularly, and higher up the lineup than his prior fourth line centre stints, partly due to lack of other options on the team. For a time before Christmas, Laich, Michalek and Colin Greening were the usual fourth line. Greening stuck in the lineup while the other two did not.

Laich has one goal, five assists and 17 shots on goal in those 16 games. His stats are nearly identical to Marc Andr Cliche, who actually has one more shot on goal but only three points. Cliche is a former Colorado Avalanche fourth line centre who hasn’t played in the NHL since 2014 15. He is also 29 to Laich’s 33.

If you want a non scoring depth centre, you could get Cliche and give him an NHL contract for league minimum. You can get Sergey Kalinin for something like Viktor Loov. You can get Ben Smith for nothing on waivers, and both Kalinin and Smith are paid very low salaries.

Laich is in the last year of a contract with a $4.5 million cap hit. As of today, his remaining daily cap hit is $926,944. That means you have to have that much cap space just to put him on your team! Kalinin needs just under $165,000 in space. If a team, cup contender or not, wanted some depth, they could get nearly six players at Kalinin’s salary for what Laich will take up in cap room.

Even if Laich is better than Cliche or Kalinin he might be to some extent, as he has great positional awareness and doesn’t do foolish things he’s so wildly overpaid for what he produces, that the only way a team would want him would be if the Leafs retained salary similar to the Michael Stone deal.

The Leafs have only one retained salary on the books, and teams are allowed a maximum of three. If they think they can move some players for real returns this deadline by retaining some salary, they are unlikely to waste a spot on what Laich will bring back, if they could even find a taker.

It’s tough to face the end of your hockey playing career. And the tradition of veterans who used to be great and are now merely good enough moving to contenders is a long one. That’s the sort of deal a player gets when they have both the bona fides in the NHL and the cachet of a good veteran like Jarome Iginla has. Laich only has the second part of that package.

ST. LOUIS It was a perfect father son moment.

Brett Hull had just finished playing for the St. Louis Blues in the 2017 Winter Classic alumni game against the Chicago Blackhawkson Saturday at Busch Stadium, and he was sitting in the Cardinals clubhouse when his legendary father, Bobby, walked in.

Bobby Hull shuffled over, sat down and quickly began to hold court. It didn’t take long for Wayne Gretzky, Chris Pronger and Adam Oates to come over and shake hands with the former member of the Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers.

It also turned into the perfect opportunity for an impromptu Q with Brett and Bobby Hull. But if I was in game shape, it’s just hockey. If you’re good at all, you can play, right? So I think I’d be all right. Would I get 80 goals? Doubt it. Fantastic. They are so fast and skilled. Like, I’ve been watching the World Juniors, and those guys on Team USA, they are so fast, so skilled. It’s unbelievable. What was the best trash line?

Brett Hull: Oh, there’s too many. There were one a shift, two a shift, and I think someone got yelled at for doing the mannequin challenge out there. We’re all friends now and appreciate the battles that we had with one another. Once you retire, [the animosity] is gone. With the [current] players, it’s real.

This is when Hull’s father walked over and sat down. It’s a young man’s game. I’ll be 78 in two days, or three days, on Jan. 3. I’ll accept cards and letters. But where has the time gone? I remember the first 40 years of my life, but this last 40, I don’t know if I’ve accomplished anything. It would be nice to know if I have, I don’t know [laughs]. All I know is it’s still fun to watch hockey played the way it should be played. 91 [Vladimir Tarasenko of the Blues], and I said, ‘If Chicago had you or if you had the Bread Man [Artemi Panarin], it would be a pretty good team.’ No, it’s great. It’s great that good, young players are coming along like that to entertain you. That’s what we need. We need guys like these future Hall of Famers in the game today. Grab that biscuit, and do something with it. Entertain the people.

Bobby Hull: No. Wayne was a fabulous player to set them up; Brett would finish it off. My dad used to say when I’d get an assist, ‘Anyone can get an assist. It takes someone to score a goal.’

Bobby Hull: I was never injured. Just feelings, mostly [laughs]. I had bruised feelings to think that Bugsy [Bryan] Watson [was] out there just to prevent me from entertaining the people. That bothered me. Then when I clubbed him cheap hockey jerseys
in the head for 35 stitches, he said, ‘Bobby, I never thought that of you.’ I went right over to the Detroit bench, and [Gordie] Howe, [Alex] Delvecchio and all of them were sitting, and I went over, and I stuck my head over the boards, and I said, ‘The blood is on your hands.’ And that’s what bothered me: that I was not allowed to entertain the people. That’s what bothered me the most because I knew what I was out there for: to entertain. I always said I played for [many] reasons: To make a boyhood dream come true to play in the NHL, which I dreamed about all my life. To entertain you people royally, and I hope I did, and to work up a thirst so I could drink beer and chase girls maybe not in that order.
